Reflections from Kenya
It’s hard to put into words what these past days in Kenya have meant to me.
From the moment I arrived, I was reminded that community is not something you build—it’s something you nurture, honor, and mobilize. Whether in the vibrant classrooms of Kabarak and Kenyatta Universities or sitting outside on a hilltop in Kuresoi South, I witnessed strength, wisdom, and resilience woven into everyday life.
This wasn’t just a trip. It was a return to purpose.
We walked alongside community health promoters who are doing transformative work with minimal resources but maximum heart. We shared space with elders, youth, and leaders who welcomed us not as outsiders, but as co-travelers in the journey to better health for all.
There were tough conversations, tender moments, and powerful insights. I left each dialogue circle deeply moved—and deeply committed.
I’m especially excited about the growing opportunities to collaborate with Kabarak University and Kenyatta University. Together, we’re exploring ways to expand community-engaged research, education, and innovation that bridges continents and uplifts communities.
My heart is full. My mind is turning. And my spirit is rooted. Asante sana, Kenya. Until next time. See below for my thoughts on the trip!
From the U.S. to Kenya – we’ve arrived!
After a long journey filled with anticipation, we’ve officially touched down in beautiful Kenya. Grateful for safe travels, warm welcomes, and the beginning of an incredible journey of learning, partnership, and connection.
Up close with majestic elephants at the David Sheldrick Wildlife Trust, eye-to-eye with towering giraffes at the Giraffe Centre, and a wild ride through Nairobi National Park where lions, zebras, and rhinos roam against the city skyline. brought to us by our AMAZING tour expert, Mutugi Wild!
We also made a quick stop at the Maasai Market—no pics because all hands were on deck for bargaining! Let’s just say, it was a master class in negotiation and cultural exchange. Grateful for these moments that blend Kenya’s rich wildlife, history, and hospitality.
Beginning our journey in community health across Nakuru, Baringo, and Kericho counties!
Our first stop: a full day at Kabarak University, where we met with university leadership and the incredible Department of Public Health team. We exchanged ideas, shared priorities, and began mapping out how we can work together to strengthen health education, research, and action in semi-rural and rural communities.
This is more than a visit—it’s the start of a growing partnership rooted in mutual respect, learning, and shared vision for healthier communities.
Circles of hope and action across three communities in Nakuru, Baringo, and Kericho
We joined vibrant community dialogue sessions—spaces where people came together to share priorities, identify challenges, and spark solutions. It was humbling to be recognized by community members from our previous visit—and uplifting to see a few proudly wearing their Public Health Indiana shirts from last year!
We’re not building something new—we’re already here. Together, we’re mobilizing an army of Hoosier public health warriors in Kenya, working side by side to improve the spaces where people live, work, play, and pray.
Pamoja kwa afya—together for health.
Grateful for the trust, wisdom, and energy that fuels this growing movement.
A full day of reflection, strategy, and next steps!
We closed out our week with a debrief and action planning session alongside our dedicated partners at Kabarak University. Using the principles of Strategic Doing, we mapped out practical, doable steps to keep our momentum going and make meaningful progress in the communities we serve.
This isn’t just partnership—it’s shared purpose in motion.
We’re energized by the clarity, commitment, and creativity in the room. Looking forward to the great work ahead as our collaboration continues to grow and deepen.
Back to the Wild!
After an incredible week of community work, we recharged with a breathtaking safari through Lake Nakuru National Park—guided by the WONDERFUL team Mutugi Wild!
We were treated to a parade of Kenya’s finest—baboons, giraffes, flamingos, buffalo, rhinos, and pelicans—all reminding us of the beauty and balance of nature. And then… a perfect pause at the waterfall, where we weren’t chasing it, but basking in joy and gratitude. Surrounded by flowing water, sunshine, and laughter, we took time to reflect, breathe, and be present in the moment.
Kenya continues to gift us awe and renewal.
